Boston has a large variety of buses on the MBTA. They range from compressed gas to trackless trolley. The above roster gives a good overview of the variety. Of interest are 1101 class which is daul mode; conventional diesel but trackless trolley in areas such as the Trade Center where electrical operation is mandated due to the otherwise fumes from diesel power. Currently Boston received its second order of New Flyer DL40 low floor buses numbering 310. The future of the CNG are also in question right now as it appears the either low sulphur diesel or hybrid buses might be considered in the future. Compared to other properties MBTA has a relatively small fleet of conventioinal articulated buses. Many of them are assigned on the 39 route which supplements the E Branch of the Green Line and goes where those cars once went to Arborway on the south side. The third phase of the Silver Line will no doubt have additional articulated buses added to the fleet. 25 new New Flyer 60 foot articulated low sulpher burning buses have been in delivered in 2010 to supplement the existing Nabi fleet currently used on the Silver Line and 39. The RTS rebuilts are mercifully being withdrawn from service as newer buses replace them. This roster does not include suburban affiliated lines within the greater Boston are nor does it list particular garage assignments and lines served other than the trackless trolleys that are serviced at the Cambridge garage on Mass Ave.
